Alternatives to Ebay

It seems Ebay is in the middle of another big controversy. Even after reading all the latest headlines and news stories about the issue, I still find myself somewhat confused. From what I can tell, the new policies will mainly concern those who run stores or sell on the site on a regular basis. But what about those of us who are casual sellers and are only looking to sell off a few things here and there? Maybe it’s time to look into a few of the other online auction sites.

There are literally hundreds of online auction sites out there, but many of them are either fly-by-night operations or haven’t had enough exposure to bring in the customers sellers depend on. After doing a little research, I’ve found a few other sites that you might be interested in trying out.

eBid.net–This is an interesting little site that is set up in much the same way as Ebay. They have regular auctions, as well as stores and forums for their members. Memberships are free and sign up is easy. For anyone looking to sell their stuff, you need to sign up as a member then upgrade by entering a debit or credit card number. Though there is no fee for this action, they say they need a card for verification. Listing fees are free and final fees are 3% of the total sale. If you decide to upgrade to the seller+ category, fees range from $1.99 for a 7-day listing to a one-time fee of $49.99 for a lifetime listing. At this point, there are no listing or final sale fees.

WeBidz.com–It took me awhile to find what I was looking for on this site. However, I did find out that this site is more into the whole idea of running stores than casual selling. But that’s not such a bad thing here. There is a one-time fee of $5 to verify your account at this site. Once that $5 is paid, there are very few other fees. The most expensive part I found at this place is that you can run a store, with 500,000 items listed, for a fee of $33 per year. There are no final sale fees, and the most expensive listing fee I found was $0.07 for a front page listing. Not bad at all. My only problem with this site is that it was hard to find any real information.

OnlineAuction.com–This site offers 2 types of membership. The free membership limits buyers to $1,000 per day. In order to gain unlimited buying, there is a monthly charge of $4. In order to become a seller, you will be charged a monthly fee. A verified seller is $8 per month, and that comes with unlimited listings and no listing fees or final sale fees. For $96 per year, you’ll get all the same as above, plus you’ll get access to the auction enhancement package. *In case you’re wondering, $8 per month for 12 months is $96*

Auction.com–Finally, I found what has to be the simplest site online. This site is free to join and after running through every possible FAQ I could find, it seems that there are very few selling fees. It seems that it is free to do a basic listing, but there are a few optional fees for auction enhancement that run from $1 to $20. My only concern with this site is that I couldn’t find anything that mentioned final sale fees or photo gallery fees.

These are only a few of the hundreds of online auction sites out there. But, as with any site, take the time to really look at everything the site has to offer, and always read the fine print. Be sure to research any auction site before signing up or trying to sell anything.
