Design Your Own Greeting Cards To Sell

Being a writer, I know how hard it can be to break into some of the more lucrative areas of the industry. One such writing niche is the greeting card market. How often have you been looking through the greeting cards in your local store, trying to find just the right words? Well, those words are written by someone, and usually be freelance writers. The problem is that so many people are trying to get into that market that the competition is high.

However, there is another option. Create and sell your own greeting cards online. Actually, this is a bit harder than it sounds. Now, keep in mind that I’m not talking about e-cards. I’m talking about actual greeting cards that can be sent through the postal system. If you work it right, you can even start an entire line of greeting cards.

First off, you’ll need to come up with an idea as to what kind of cards you want to make. Here, the options are only limited to your imagination. For instance, you might create cards for the recently divorced, or something for the person who just lost a cherished pet. Let your imagination run with this one.

Next, you’ll need to decide whether your going to use a greeting card software to design your cards, or are you going to do it on your own. If you have any clip art programs, these work just fine. Another option is to create your cards by hand. It’s amazing what you can do with a few bits of cloth, some twine, and some tiny fake flowers. Be creative.

Now comes the hard part. Putting the word inside the cards. If you’ve ever spent any time going through the huge numbers of greeting cards, you’ll know that most are written in verse. They don’t have to be, but if you’ve ever wanted to be a poet, now’s the time to do it. You can create some beautiful lines for a wedding card, or some humorous lines for a birthday card. Again, be creative and let your imagination run wild.

Finally, you’ll need to find envelopes to fit your cards. There are several ways of doing this. One thing that works great is construction paper. You can get these in a wide variety of colors, and they give your cards some flair. Another options is to use colored printer paper. I’ve seen printer paper come in just about every color under the sun. Simply cut your paper to size, glue down three sides, and your done. For applying the adhesive to the flap of your envelope, you can use double sided tape, with one side still covered with the protective covering.

Another tip for your envelopes is to visit the stores that sell greeting cards. If you can find out when they replenish their cards, you can ask for any extra envelopes. Somehow, there always seems to be a few left over, and they will usually be more than happy to just give them to you, free of charge.

Now, it’s just a matter of marketing your cards. You can do this from your own website, or through an online source such as Ebay or a classified ads site. Be sure to make some cards up in advance, get lots of pictures of them, and be ready for your first sale. In time, you could have your own greeting card company online.
