Make Money Writing E-Books

I work extensively with a fellow blogger by the name of Garry Conn. He wrote a post on his personal blog about why you should write an e-book. Now, if you’ve spent any time online, you’ve seen at least one e-book. E-books are a great way to convey information to the masses and make a little cash in the process. And with today’s technologies, anybody can write an e-book. The problem is that not everybody can do it well.

There are a few things to consider before writing your e-book. First and foremost, you need an idea to base your book on. Most e-books are based around how to make money online. There are literally hundreds, if not thousands, of these books out there already. If this was an idea you were considering, you might want to make sure that your idea is unique to the rest. Otherwise, it’s going to get lost in the shuffle. However, if you’ve got an amazing talent, or some old family recipes, or even just some highly useful information on how to improve your website or blog, then you have the basis for a great e-book.

Once you’ve come up with your idea, put it in outline form. Of all the things I’ve learned in school, this was the one that helped me the most. Outlining your book will help you keep on top of the topics you want to cover and in which order you want to put them in. It will also help you determine which of your topics can be eliminated in order to keep your e-book consistent. Once you’ve got everything outlined and ready to go, it’s only a matter of writing out your e-book.

Another point I’d like to mention came from another of my blogging buddies, CyberCoder. If you’ve got some great ideas, but aren’t the best writer or don’t have a lot of time to write, you might consider getting yourself a writing partner. This is one of those deals where you scratch my back, I scratch yours, comes into play. Also, a writing partner is a wonderful resource when it comes to brainstorming. You can both put your names on the e-book and bring in a wider range of potential clients.

Once you’ve finished your book, you need to put into PDF format. This is the most widely used source of e-book as it can be used by most all computers. Adobe has a great PDF creator, but if your funds are limited, there are a few cheaper PDF creators out there, and even a couple free downloads that work just as good. After you’ve created your e-book into PDF format, it’s a matter of bringing in customers. Something else to think about is setting the price of your book. Don’t sell yourself short and set a price too low. Then again, don’t think yours is the best book ever written and set the price so high that it automatically drives people away. Think of it this way. Look at what you’ve created from a buyers point of view. How much would you be willing to pay for your book?

The hardest part about writing an e-book and earning any money from it is getting people to buy the book. Promoting your book is essential. If you’ve got a blog or website, you’ve already got a great platform to start from. Also, add a link to your book in the signature of your e-mails and in any forum that you might be a member of. If you’ve got an advertising budget, buy a few spots on some of your favorite blogs. If not, offer a couple free copies to contests. Another idea is to have some of your blogging friends review your book for you. Send them a free copy in exchange for a review. Any way you can get your book seen is a plus.

The thing about e-books is that they can circulate for many years to come. If you’re idea is based on something that is seasonal or meant for a particular moment in time, this may not be the case. However, for the majority, your e-book has the potential to sell for years to come. If your book is informative, well written, and priced right, you’ll have sales coming in for a very long time.
