What are my old comic books worth?

Written by Christine Senter on March 27th, 2008

I have a couple of friends online who’s blogs are dedicated to the comic book industry. After reviewing my buddy’s site, called The Rundown, I got to wondering what all those comic books I read when I was a kid would be worth today.

So, I made a little run over to Ebay, just to get some kind of an idea as to what my comic books would have been worth, if I still had any of them. It seems that like everything else, it all depends on what you’ve got and how many others are looking for it. There were a couple things I was surprised to find out.

Ebay puts comic books into four main categories; the Golden age (1938-1955), the Silver age (1956-1969), the bronze age (1970-1979), and the Modern age (1980-today). I would have thought that the older the comic book, the more people would be interested, but I was wrong.

There were several comic books from the mid 30’s through the mid 50’s listed, but only a handful of them had any bids on them. Most of the ones that had any bids on them had to do with the old Cowboys and Indians themes, or the original Bugs Bunny comics. I was surprised to find that the biggest sellers on Ebay right now are mostly from the Bronze age. It seems that comics that came from the 70’s are the big sellers. That kills me, as that’s when I had all my comic books.

There are quite a few selling from the Silver age. Most of these seem to come from between 1963 and 1965. Comic books that were published between those two years seem to have the most bids on them. In fact, there is an issue of the Amazing Spiderman #20 vs. Scorpion, published in 1964, that is about to sell for more than $40.00.

I had noticed a few ads for more than one comic book so I thought I’d look to see what lot sets were going for. Amazingly enough, they’re not. It seems that if you’re looking to get rid of all your comic books in one shot, you might not want to try Ebay. I noticed that one seller is trying to get rid of his father’s comic book collection in lots of 60. His starting bid is only $0.99, but his shipping fees are more than $45.00. He has several listings on the page, but not one single bid.

I went ahead and checked out the listings for comic books from the Modern age, and other than a few random issues from the mid 80’s, there wasn’t much going on. I found that Grimm’s Fairy Tale reprints were selling better than the comic books were, but that really didn’t surprise me too much. Most people can still get copies of these at most hobby stores or collector’s sites.

So, I guess I should have saved all my comic books from the 70’s, as these are the ones that seem to be getting the biggest payouts. The sad thing is that I had almost every Wonder Woman comic made during that era and got rid of them when I became a teenager. Oh well, I’m still an official member of the Justice League.

Gee, I always knew you were smart. To think that you were actually reading comics in the seventies. Hell you would still have been in diapers, wouldn’t you? ;)

I wish. No, in the 70’s I was in grade school. Yes ladies and gentlemen, I will be 40 yrs old in a few months, and I’m proud of that fact.

But thanks for the compliment. :D
